Water Bi-pass can happen when the media bag is not flexible, a flexible media bag will stretch into all the corners of the filter wall or basket preventing the water from by-passing the filter media, a less flexible bag cannot achieve this and will allow the water to bi-pass through the corners or cracks left open, this will reduce water/media contact time.
Water will always take the path of least resistance, this will continue to happen until the pressures equalises, reducing the flow of water through the filter media.
Often the best way to improve the filtration system is by simply making the filter more efficient by preventing water by-pass.
When filling the filter media bag always pack the bag loosely, if the bag is packed tightly this will reduce the flexibility for the bag.
