Tropical GH, KH, pH packs

Conditioning Salts

Conditioning Salts, a mineral based general hardness (GH) water conditioner, specifically blended for tropical aquariums, benefiting both the fish and aquatic plants, while also suppling essential minerals to the nitrifying bacteria.

Use Biotope Tropical Conditioning Salts with each water change, only treat the newly added water, do not add when replacing evaporated water.

5g (1 teaspoon) added to 15 litres of newly added water will increase the GH by 6 degrees.

Biotope Tropical Conditioning Salts are phosphate free.

Tropical KH Balance

Tropical Balance, a mineral based carbonate hardness (KH) water conditioner, specifically blended for tropical aquariums, benefiting both the fish and aquatic plants, while also supplying essential minerals to the nitrifying bacteria and setting the pH at 7.00

Carbonate hardness (KH) is a temporarily hardness and is used within the aquarium system to stabilize pH, Biotope Tropical Balance has been formulated to set the pH at 7.00.

Biotope Tropical Balance is a phosphate free product.

Biotope Tropical Balance is based on the carbon cycle and not on using phosphates.

In the aquarium hobby the carbon cycle is not talked about very often, most hobbyist know about the nitrogen cycle, and the dangers of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate, but know little about the carbon cycle.

In very basic terms the carbon cycle is based around carbon dioxide, carbonates, bicarbonates and pH.

Carbon dioxide in water is an acid, carbonates and bicarbonate are on the neutral to alkaline side of the pH scale.

Carbon dioxide gas is continuously being produced in the aquarium by the fish, plants and the filtration system, while carbonates and bicarbonates are not produced within the system, it is this in balance that causes the pH to crash.

Biotope Tropical Balance is a blend of carbonates and bicarbonates, when added to the aquarium they will react with carbon dioxide, this reaction will convert the free carbon dioxide gas into the chemical compound carbonic acid and stabilize the pH at 7.00.

Biotope Tropical Balance will increase the KH level of the water, it is this level that will determine the pH.

We recommend a KH of 3 degrees for the average tropical aquarium, this level will set the pH at 7.00, however pH can also be influenced by other factors, the number of fish, water changes, aquatic plants.

Most tropical aquariums with a KH of 3 degrees will have pH 7.00.

If the pH at 3 degrees KH is higher or lower than 7.00 the KH level can be increased or decreased to suit the water chemistry of the aquarium.

pH stability is the most important factor when keeping tropical fish, if the pH is slightly higher than 7.00 and stable at that level that will be fine, unless you chasing a certain pH reading for breeding or keeping particular fish species leaving the KH at 3 degrees (the recommended dose rate) will keep the aquarium in great condition.
